How to start composting at home - a pile of brown compost against a brown wood background

No Yard? No Problem—Here’s How to Compost No Matter Where You Live

April 1, 2022

Did you know that organic matter (i.e., food) doesn’t break down properly in landfills? It's true. When buried under layers and layers of trash, organic matter lacks access to light and oxygen—two things it needs in order to decompose correctly. Without ...

Hi new friends! There’s several new faces here s Hi new friends! There’s several new faces here so I wanted to share some some quick facts about myself:⁣
⁣
👋 My name is Morgan and I talk mostly about eco things (hence, my handle). I share tips for living an imperfectly sustainable lifestyle, and strongly believe there’s no right or wrong way to live sustainably.⁣
⁣
🤗 Even though climate change is a serious topic, I try to keep things as light and fun around here as I can. The goal is to get people to participate in the environmental movement, not be scared of it.⁣
⁣
🎥 I’m a video gal, so expect a lot of Reels. I find them more fun and engaging. Plus when it comes to photos I’m just not a natural in front of the camera. Case in point, you’ll see in the first pic of this post that I’m laughing nervously bc I don’t know what to do with my hands, in the second my boyfriend has told me to “touch the shrub”, and I’m like “whaaaat, this shrub?” and in the third I have proceeded to in fact touch the shrub and am wondering “am I doing this right?”⁣
⁣
👩‍💻This is my part-time gig. The other half of my life is spent working in HR, which means you won't catch me on your feed every day, but I usually show up on Tuesdays and Fridays (sometimes Saturdays). If 2 days a week is simply not enough, you can also get more of me on TikTok, my blog, and from my weekly newsletter, The Eco Edit (sign up link in bio).⁣
⁣
💫 Other: I grew up in MI, went to school in NYC where I studied fashion and sustainability, and now reside in Chicago. I have a dog named Goose, I love puzzles, and two things that give me anxiety: driving and eating salads in professional settings.⁣

⁣
As Earth Month comes to a close, I imagine many people may be feeling a tad overwhelmed about what needs to be done to save our planet. 😅 🙋‍♀️⁣
⁣
In the past, it’s a feeling that’s plagued me from doing anything at all, and I don’t want that to be the case for you too. That’s why I’ve partnered with certified Napa Green Winery, @cakebreadcellars to bring you some tips for combating eco-anxiety, so you can keep fighting for our planet all year long:⁣
⁣
🌳 Spend time outdoors and connect with nature. Nothing motivates you to protect the planet like spending time appreciating it.⁣
⁣
😌 Make "unwind appointments" and spend them doing calming activities that bring you joy, like yoga, sipping loose leaf tea, or sitting down with a good book and a glass of wine. Keep up the sustainability theme by choosing wine from a company like Cakebread that practices organic farming, water/energy conservation, and extensive recycling (nearly 90% of their winery-generated waste is recycled ♻️).⁣
⁣
📱When you find yourself caught in a loop of climate doom content or news, unfollow those sources and seek out more positive ones instead.⁣
⁣
📝 Keep a journal of your sustainability accomplishments. When you're feeling overwhelmed, look back at it and add to it.⁣
⁣
🤝 Connect with like-minded people by joining sustainability Facebook groups, volunteering for local environmental organizations, or organizing a park clean up within your community.⁣
⁣
Lmk your fave strategy for managing eco-anxiety in the comments👇, and if you want to add some Cakebread wine to your next self-care evening, visit the link in my bio to shop their full selection.⁣

Earth Day is over—now what? #ad⁣ ⁣ You keep Earth Day is over—now what? #ad⁣
⁣
You keep going! We can’t save the planet by advocating for it just once a year, which is why I’ve teamed up with @dirtkitchensnacks to bring you five simple eco-friendly actions you can take every day:⁣
⁣
🍅 Eat more plants. Dirt Kitchen can help ya out with their delicious plant-based snacks. They’re good for snacking anytime, anywhere and don’t worry, they’re not your grandma’s bland brussel sprouts. They’re made with real, nutritious and deliciously crunchy veggies that are good for you and the planet.⁣
⁣
🛍 Shop secondhand first. With the internet, shopping secondhand is easier than ever these days. Take a moment to search your local thrift store or an online marketplace before buying things new.⁣
⁣
♻️ Reuse! Simply reducing the amount of single-use items in your life is a great way to be more sustainable year-round. Switch from disposable water bottles to reusables, from plastic wrap to beeswax wraps, or even just wash and reuse that plastic baggie one more time.⁣
⁣
🗑 Reduce food waste by composting and choosing products that use upycycled ingredients. For instance, to make their Air Dried Veggie Crisps, Dirt Kitchen uses imperfect (but perfectly delicious and nutritious) veggies that would’ve been thrown away otherwise.⁣
⁣
👯‍♀️ Have conversations. Get your friends and family involved by talking about what protecting the planet means to you. Strength is in numbers, and if we have more people aware of environmental issues, then we have more people to help solve them. Not sure how to begin the convo? Sharing this post with them may be a good start 😉.⁣

Anyone else feel like Earth Day should be more wid Anyone else feel like Earth Day should be more widely recognized as a literal holiday and something we should celebrate? Something we should perhaps have the day off for, to go enjoy nature and do something good for the planet and our souls? Just a thought 💭⁣

Have a happy Friday friends 💙⁣

And my thrifting tips 🤗⁣
⁣
I had a lot of buyer’s remorse when I first started buying clothes secondhand. I shopped without a plan and ended up with clothes that didn’t fit, or weren’t actually my style. Frustrated, I’d usually just end up buying from a familiar fast fashion brand—it was easier, quicker, and if I didn’t like something I could easily return it.⁣
⁣
I’d always end up feeling guilty though. Guilty for wasting money, guilty for supporting brands that didn’t align with my values.⁣
⁣
However, as I became more engrained in the sustainability community, I started to pick up more strategies for thrifting, and gradually it became easier. Now I can easily put together a whole outfit with only thrifted pieces, but it took me several years to get there.⁣
⁣
👉 What mistakes have you made while thrifting? What tips do you have for beginners?⁣

How can you lower your dog’s carbon footprint... How can you lower your dog’s carbon footprint...I mean...pawprint? 🐾⁣
⁣
It’s a question I asked myself frequently when I became a first-time dog owner. Between food, toys, and treats, it seemed like my little 10-pound puppy was creating a truckloads-worth of waste 😅.⁣
⁣
I tried to cut back by purchasing pet supplies secondhand, as well as upcycling old t-shirts and socks into toys, but there was one major part of his daily routine I was overlooking—✨his meals✨.⁣
⁣
Many conventional dog foods are meat-based. In fact, American dogs eat as much meat every year as the entire human populations of California, Texas, and Pennsylvania combined.⁣
⁣
So I began to incorporate more plant-based foods, like @feedpetaluma’s baked dog food. It’s 100% plant-based, baked with solar power, and made with organic ingredients that provide just as much complete protein as other best-selling dog foods 🙌.⁣
⁣
If you're wondering just how much all of this lowers Goose's carbon pawprint, a golden retriever on a Petaluma diet versus conventional dog food annually conserves 30,000 gallons of fresh water, 2,600 pounds of C02E, and 1.9 acres of farmland 🤯. ⁣
⁣
Plus they offer treats too—their organic Sweet Potato Jerky is loaded with essential minerals that’ll support cognitive health, bone growth, energy production, and most importantly, Goose loves them 🐶.⁣
⁣
Head to feedpetaluma.com to snag a free sample for your pup and if they love it, you can use code MORGAN30 for 30% off your full-size purchase!⁣
