Small Sustainable Steps Matter: Here’s Why You Should be an Imperfect Environmentalist

January 4, 2022

If you’ve never heard the term “imperfect environmentalist” it’s time to add it to your mental dictionary (or your actual dictionary if anyone still has one of those). In my opinion the phrase is a tad redundant. Imperfection should be considered an i ...

How to Reduce Food Waste: Practical Tips For Keeping Your Groceries out of the Landfill

February 28, 2021

1.4 billion tons. That’s the amount of food that gets thrown away every year. Why does this matter? Doesn’t it just decompose in the landfill? It actually does not. In landfills, organic waste (food) doesn’t have the right set of conditions to properly b ...

Hot girls consciously declutter their closets. 💁‍♀️

And by that I mean, we don’t drop a giant bag at Goodwill because a lot of those items go unsold, end up landfilled, or shipped to developing countries where they often become more of a burden than a “gift” to locals (more on that below).

➡️ So here are some more sustainable options:

1. Give away clothes in good condition to friends or on your local Buy Nothing Group

2. Sell gently used clothes on apps like @Poshmark or @Depop (p.s I just posted some new stuff on my Poshmark if ya wanna check it out, link in b!0)

3. Upcycle or downcycle unusable clothes for your own use

If you can’t do any of the above the landfill may be your best option (which I know is a hot take 😅)

I don’t love clothing recycling programs because many in store drop offs (like those at certain fast fashion retailers) only recycle a *very* small amount of the clothes put in their bins.

The rest is sent overseas to be resold at markets, like Kantamanto Market in Ghana where ~40% of clothes received are of such poor quality they’re deemed worthless and dumped in the landfill anyways.

(The article “Dead White Man’s Clothes” by Linton Besser goes very in depth into this if you’d like to learn more).

So, programs like For Day’s takeback bag program (which I get a lot of Q’s about) may be good to use every once in a while if you have some truly unwearable clothes to get rid of since some of it is put to good use.

But the priority should always be taking care of and using what you have. 💚

A lil vlog of a week in my low buy year. 💛 The A lil vlog of a week in my low buy year. 💛

The non-essential spend this week was a tad higher than usual with date night and girls night falling on the same weekend, but I’m glad that every non-essential I spent money on was either:

1. Secondhand
2. An experience
3. Supporting a local small biz
