Valentine’s Day – it’s all about love. Love for your partner, your friends, even yourself, but what about the earth? For those looking to celebrate the holiday in a sustainable fashion, here are a few eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts that say “I love you AND the planet.”
If your man loves his facial hair (maybe at times more than you), gift him an organic beard kit from Etsy seller, Meadowlark Botanical. Her products are always vegan and don’t contain any synthetics, artificial fragrances or GMOs. The beard balm and oil duo (which btw received 5 star reviews) is handmade in tiny batches. Their creator is passionate about concocting truly natural products that are effective and don’t cause irritation. If you want to shop for more than just your man she also offers a variety of other products, including facial creams, toners, masks and moisturizers.
Pro-tip: men love coziness just as much (if not more) than women, making this cashmere sweater a fantastic gift option. Beyond looking and feeling great, it also gives your man a reason to throw out his beloved ragged crewneck from 2013 (tip: cut it into dishrags or “paper towel” instead of tossing it in the landfill). Now, cashmere isn’t always the most sustainable material, but Naadam is changing that. The company is run by two dudes whose aim is to improve production of the luxury fabric. They pay fair wages, combat desertification and invest in happy healthy goats (check out their video to learn more). Oh also, the sweater is unisex, so ladies feel free to “borrow” it for yourself (after all, according to our conscious shopping tips, that really is one of the most sustainable ways to “shop”).
Eco-Friendly Time Pieces
For men who love a good time piece (or maybe are just always running late) watches make great eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts. Tense Watch offers a variety of styles made from 100% recycled or reclaimed wood. They’re also a member of 1% for the Planet, which means 1% of sales go to organizations that help keep our friend planet earth healthy. That sounds like a great time to us 🙂
Impress your girl with a piece of ethically sourced jewelry from Brilliant Earth. The conscious jeweler offers everything from earrings to necklaces to engagement rings (if that’s where you’re at in life). They craft their jewels from primarily recycled metals (but don’t worry they’ve got the same high quality as their newly minted counterparts). For you high rollers looking to gift some diamonds, Brilliant Earth only utilizes “Beyond Conflict Free” diamonds, meaning they meet strict environmental & human rights standards. ALSO, their packaging is FSC certified, indicating that it comes from responsibly managed forests. Visit Brilliant Earth’s about page to learn more about how they’re making the earth, well, more brilliant.
Unless your girl has expressed a strong aversion to baths, it’s hard to go wrong with a set of bath bombs. You’re giving her the gift of relaxation, alone time and soothing scents (which we guarantee are 3 of her favorite things). These bath bombs from Beauty By Earth are not tested on animals (seriously, the brand is Leaping Bunny certified) and they come in planet-friendly packaging (e.g., recyclable and compostable). Even better, you won’t find any SLS, dyes, colorants, or artificial fragrance in any of Beauty By Earth’s products. With that said, the brand does admit that their bombs contain a predominant amount of clays and certain minerals that are not certified organic. We don’t think that’s a deal breaker though and find their transparency to be pretty…bomb.
A classic perfume makes a great Valentine’s Day gift. When searching for an eco-friendly option, transparency is key. Legally, the contents of a “fragrance” don’t have to be disclosed, but ethical brands will tell you about both their natural and synthetic ingredients (yes, we know “synthetic” is somewhat of a four letter word, but hear us out). Some unfortunate souls are allergic to popular botanicals like lavender or chamomile and some species, like Sandalwood, are being overharvested. In these cases, a lab-made alternative may be the more sustainable option. When in doubt, ask the brand about its ingredients, or suggest an eco-improvement (we’re trying to do more of that as part of our 2020 resolutions). Brands that value transparency (like Phlur, Skylar, OneSeed and By Rosie Jane) will take time to answer your inquiry.
For Anyone (even yourself)
This vegan soy wax candle will not only fill your Valentine’s home with a lovely scent, but it’ll also remind them to be the Bad Ass Bitch they were born to be. The candles are hand poured in a glass that you can reuse once the flame goes out (which won’t be for about 75 hours) and they’re topped with a recycled paper cap for minimal waste.
Sometimes it’s easier to tell your Valentine how you feel in writing, in which case give them a card. These ones from Etsy seller, Happy Dappy Bits are made from recycled materials and come in biodegradable cellophane sleeves (the sleeves can’t be recycled though, ONLY composted). If you’re looking for a card with a bit more humor you can check out the ones from Sketchy Print Co, which are made from FSC certified paper and use cellophane sleeves (again ONLY compostable, NOT recyclable, please don’t make us say it again).
Even if you’re on a tight budget you can still say “I love you” with a handmade gift. All you need is a mason jar and some paper. Fill the jar with fun memories you have of your Valentine and when they have a bad day, they can reach over, pull one out and (hopefully) have a good laugh. Even if the relationship takes a turn, they can at least compost the paper and utilize the jar for something else, like wine, food storage, or to hold flowers from their future (better) partner.
We hope this list will help you show some love to the planet and your loved ones this February. If we missed any great eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts let us know in the comments!
